Chautauqua, New York: On August 26th, 2018, NCCIT Board Member Dr. Christina Cowger and Advisory Board Member Allyson Caison had the honor of receiving the annual Joshua Heintz Award for Humanitarian Achievement. This award recognizes individuals who demonstrate compassion, vision, and dedication in pursuit of international humanitarian justice.

Caison and Cowger are founding members of the grassroots network of human rights advocates, North Carolina Stop Torture Now. Their organization worked to end America's Rendition, Detention, and Interrogation program in which they led an effort to stop flights from North Carolina that were used to transport suspects for torture in secret prisons in other countries. The chief prosecutors of the International Criminal Court award this honor to them at their annual International Humanitarian Law Dialogues in Chautauqua NY.

This award has been described by the EU Reporter as “one of the world’s most prestigious individual achievement prizes.”
